Rabies

RABIES IN PUEBLO COUNTY
We have had our 3rd positive rabid animal in Pueblo- County for 2015. Be sure your animals are vaccinated and if you see a dead or suspicious acting animal, call Pueblo Animal Services (PAS) at 719-544-3005. Do not approach suspicious animals and be sure you take the proper precautions when disposing of dead animals.

Rabies Facts:
1.) There is no cure for rabies, and it is almost always fatal. Once clinical signs occur, an infected animal usually dies within five days.
2.) Rabies virus is spread by contact with the saliva of an infected animal, usually through a bit, but it has been known to be transmitted through scratching and an existing wound.
3.) Human rabies cases in the U.S. currently average two per year. Cases of rabies in domestic pets average 400-500 per year.
4.) Most common rabies carriers in the U.S. are raccoons, bats, skunks, and foxes.
